Australian Skin and Skin Cancer Research Centre Workshop

Friday, May 13, 2016 - 13:30

A major step towards establishing Brisbane as the Australian Skin Science Hub occurred today with the first meeting for the Australian Skin and Skin Cancer Research Centre, at Victoria Park, Brisbane.

The Australian Skin & Skin Cancer Research Centre (ASSC), led jointly by the University of Queensland (UQ) and the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute (QIMRB), in collaboration with Mater Research, will become an internationally competitive research centre combining strong basic and clinical research, and serve as the skin and cancer research hub for Australia.

The ASSC brings together over 40 research teams from UQ and QIMRB currently working on keratinocyte cancers, melanoma and skin research. This establishes a collaborative Skin Science network with the research expertise to drive skin and skin cancer research in Australia.

The initial ASSC Workshop, led by Professor H. Peter Soyer (UQ), Professor David Whiteman (QIMRB) and Associate Professor Kiarash Khosrotehrani (UQ), was a resounding success. Over 60 researchers and clinicians with an interest in skin science attended the event.

Professor Melissa Brown, Deputy Executive Dean and Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, UQ, and Professor Frank Gannon, Director and CEO, QIMRB were in attendance and reiterated their support for the formation of the Research Centre.
