Lecture highlights advances in melanoma treatments

Tuesday, August 13, 2019 - 15:45

The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute and Dermatology Research Centre hosted the 2019 Alan Cooper Epiderm Lecture at the Translational Research Institute in Brisbane on Friday 9 August.

This year's event featured a keynote presentation by Professor Georgina Long and Professor Richard Scolyer, Co-Medical Directors of Melanoma Institute Australia, on “Zero deaths from melanoma”.

The pairing of the world renowned medical oncologist and pathologist in the melanoma field provided insight into the advances made in recent years.

A key feature of the Alan Cooper Epiderm Lecture in recent years has also been annual grants awarded by the Australian Skin and Skin Cancer Research Centre (ASSC).

The ASSC draws together some of the world’s leading experts from The University of Queensland and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, and this year launched two new funding schemes for Early career Researchers.

The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute’s Professor Kiarash Khosrotehrani announced one ASSC Early Career Travel Award and four ASSC Early Career Researcher Grants.

The lecture also included an opening address by the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Geoff McColl, Adjunct Associate Professor David Francis, President, Australasian College of Dermatologists, Professor Alan Cooper AM, and Master of Ceremonies, Professor Monika Janda.

A photo album from the event can be viewed online.

This year’s event acknowledged UQ's campaign to Endow the Chair in Dermatology.
